But enough about sales pitches, let's trace the story of this installment all the way back.

Obviously, Project Nightmare has been the one constant, akin to the sunset and sunrise, death, and taxation. But this year, there was an off-chance it wouldn't happen.

Approx 4 months ago, I was in-between jobs, awaiting to return to my prior job and I got the news that the job was non-existent because of some bad business on someone's end. So essentially my lifeline for the fall months was gone, in a moment. No more of that.

I didn't expect it would hit that hard but somehow, it did. N0_HER0ES's development was stalled, scrubbing the planned 12/13/14 release I was hoping and trying to make a reality, and eventually Project Nightmare felt it as well. I was unfocused for a good 4 weeks, not caring one inch, about anything. All that mattered was video games, netflix, and eating. And I knew it was wrong. But I didn't care. At all.

At that point, there was serious conversion about ending the project in 2015, stopping everything after N0_HER0ES and moving forward with life, shedding the last part of my youth. I didn't want to acknowledge it so for my own sake, I kept it a secret for a long time, no one knew and I didn't openly talk about it for the longest time.

So I wallowed in my deepening private pit of garbage, orchestrating a movement of dishonesty and veiled answers. No details. Just a bold front.

In November, the work on RE:Volution resumed and it was hard, because this year, there was no common theme to anything. So there's no direction, it's far too late to determine it, and it's slated to drop 1.1.15. What do you do? Adapt.

So the reason for it's very uneven feel is because it speaks best when it describes something. I think this collection of songs works very well to point out the reality of the project, and how it just was put together, assembled to craft a patchy whole. Things are imperfect but there are at a point where it works.

I like to describe it as a tape of sounds that range from all over, and all feel like their own separate idea that stands alone. I hope you like it and we'll see you later this year for N0_HER0ES.

BTW, here's the tracklist as of now.
1.
2.
3.
4. Frail Safety
5.
6.
7.
8. Chasing the Elusive
9.
10.
11.
12. Chatterboxes on Mute
13.
14.Larnel Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07278590959877513180noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6533726793102771910.post-35733643304382228092014-07-24T10:27:00.000-07:002014-07-24T10:27:30.119-07:00Blog Report: SetbacksHey there,

So for those who have been following the social media accounts under my name these past few months, you may have been hearing about attempts to put a band together along with the delays to N0_HER0ES and the release of Project Nightmare: Link to Future Past.

Well, we got some updates for you.

-First is the band. Setback is an understatement. It's now all the way back to the start. Lost two members of the band due to time commitments and such in the past week alone. So now this attempt has fallen face-flat and there's nothing I can do at this point in time. It's either try and figure this out or just recognize this ain't happening. Which sucks.

-Second is the mixtape. That has been hit with a few setbacks, specifically not having enough time to record as of late and potentially debating about HOW to release it. There was an idea to split it in 2 parts, but I think the pacing and emotion of it would be a stark contrast in parts. One part is cheery, the other is dark. It sounds like it could work but does it work? I'll be spending the next week or so listening to a variety of tracklists on my iPod to see what fits and if there's a danger of overload.

At this rate, the window for release is between September and December. So really, this is wide open right now. Very wide open. Depends on recording, the tracklist, and the decisions to be made.

-Third is Link to Future Past. For something rushed (just look at the album art), it wasn't half bad. I kinda left it open for a follow up, so who knows, maybe it'll happen.

More updates to come on the social media links. Stay tuned.

-mc larnyLarnel Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07278590959877513180noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6533726793102771910.post-27007054912735523672014-04-28T21:34:00.003-07:002014-04-28T21:34:32.864-07:00Blog Report: The Tell-AllHey everyone,

Been a few months since I last spoke, but it's been a crazy elevator for awhile now, that has finally stabilized itself and gets ever so close to it's destination.

So let's start with the big one: N0_HER0ES. The mixtape is missing one song (which I'm working on right now) and I do have some plans for it. The lyrics are done. So I guess the next two months are recording this bad boy and finalizing some things here and there. Specifically guests and what the strategy for making this all stick will be.

I know that, for the past two years, this project has been my life, and while it has taken forever to realize, and even went through a mid-stream realignment...I'm proud of it. And I like how this has been played close to the chest and nothing has been spilled about it so far, keeping a sense of mystery that is missing in today's internet-infused world.

Also, the arrival of N0_HER0ES ushers in a new age for the live performances. After failing and failing to find the right pieces, the decision was made to take the band in a more rap-rock direction. So thus I've been working on a new version of a few songs to make them more aggressive but not Fred Durst-levels of aggression.

Hopefully, this summer, the first appearances of this new live show will be a reality.

Now on another front: There's a couple of projects I'm working on that are both familiar and unexpected.

One of them is Project Nightmare: Links of Future Past. That's going to be fun, mainly because the idea for this one is Zelda + indie rock + orchestral.

It's as awesome as it sounds, but it's going to take some time to get right. So don't expect to hear it until September at the latest, and even then, that will be probably be the first song.

The next one is on the production front. I'm proud to say that I have a multitude of projects I'm helping by lending my beat making skill to the process. Those are pending right now but...I can share that the beats I'm working on this very moment have me smiling, because it's that good.

And in Good Coffee Inc. news, we're starting over. OK.

Also, in other news, changes are coming down the pike. Currently determining the fate of Confessions After Dark 2: uglyside. Good chance the EP gets re-written entirely, leaving the beats made for it...up in the air.

Maybe, just maybe these beats come back for a special reason. That reason I can't figure out.

So here's the recap...N0_HER0ES June 30th. Shows this summer. Producing for a few friends. Could be re-writing the EP from scratch. Stay tuned. Blah blah blah.

-mc larnyLarnel Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07278590959877513180noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6533726793102771910.post-75089900575648005202014-01-06T09:17:00.001-08:002014-01-06T09:17:25.629-08:00Project Nightmare Evolution : How It All Came Together (And Nearly Fell Apart)Project Nightmare: Evolution by MC Larny

-Origins-

After the launch of Project Nightmare 36(5) last year, there was a lull. The year-long production cycle of 36(5) was over, and it was more of a relief for me, because the project didn't wind up being a manic rush to the finish line like the majority of the series has been.

I was trying to find the next twist in the series. What's going to change this series for the better? What stylistic change will be the best and not the one that compromises it?

While I pondered it, mired in the still-ongoing production of N0_HER0ES and various remixes and reinventions (including a spell as DEF 85), I allowed influences to enter my circle and began to ponder, what is the one thing I haven't done?

-Production-

Production begun on August 5th, with the posting of the teaser track "Awake and Asleep" on soundcloud. Reaction was positive, as I tried to find a direction with how this would all move forward. One idea I had was to include guest vocalists on a few songs, but this idea was moved to a remix project, slated for production this year, entitled Project Nightmare RE:volution. It didn't happen because of time constraints...hoping to make it happen in 2014 somehow, so stay tuned.

I found the influence for the whole project...and it was, surprisingly, a combo of trip-hop and chiptune. Slowed-down beats, vinyl grooves and NES arpeggios just seemed like a natural fit for me.

I always wanted to do a trip-hop project, be more of a producer, let someone else take the reigns of vocals and make something out of it. While that hasn't happened to me (and I wish it will), it's a fun little thing to explore.

I had one idea of making it a concept album. But that died after the major parts of the idea went to the wayside.

The production was off and on, being swapped with the continuation of the mixtape and the distractions of reality.

Specifically, getting a job.

Yes, I got a job.

And then that's when things got complicated.

-It Almost Didn't Happen-

Evolution got held up because of a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff, specifically not being able to complete N0_HER0ES in time, and thus, that delay, along with some real-life drama (2 car incidents. Don't ask.) meant I had little time to finalize everything. So what happened was the project became stalled and it finally reached the finish line...48 hours before it was due. I had to pull an all nighter to complete it. Since I was going to be out and about in Boston that night at work, deadlines came up like THAT.

-What Do I Think Of It Now-

This Project Nightmare was a lot more edgy, because I took the idea of mixing chiptune instruments and trip-hop (you can tell) into a unique hip-hop blend, something that is extremely far out. How do I feel about it all now that's it over?

Accomplished. Happy that Part 1 of this tale is out, excited for the remix compilation to happen this year. Potentially.

Enjoy it, because I tried to. Whoops...poor choice of words.

So it's 2014. And obviously, it's a new year, happy new year.

Now that's out of the way. Let's get to the down and dirty.

2014 is going to be a year of changes. Some of them well over-due, others a bit harder.

To start, the production of N0_HER0ES is mostly coming to a head as of next week. Tracking all the solo songs next week and trying to squeeze in the 2 guest verses as well. The beats have been totally finalized, some songs have been cut in length and things have been added to it. A couple of road tests (specifically, collaborator feedback) and some songs were good but needed to get better. So the delays have helped...somewhat.

Also, a note about the song "The Story"...I'm scouting for someone to take over the role of guest vocalist for that song (original choice dropped out last month). Obviously I'm willing to sacrifice a timely release in exchange for the songs being presented as they should be. Could lead to some interesting possibilities.

On that note....there's a few other things at hand. One of them being...Project Nightmare.Project Nightmare: Evolution by MC Larny

By now, you may have already seen or heard the new installment, Evolution. If you have, I thank you for it. I had a lot of fun staying up till 4AM last night finishing that for your pleasure!

Ahem. Exhaustion notwithstanding, I think there's a good chance that Nightmare 7 (yes, I've already thought about it)...will probably be a ways off. However, a follow-up to Evolution, (R)Evolution is in the works, and this one...ooh boy it's a doozy.

Remixes. By friends. This could be bad or really good.

Ok, the negative post wasn't needed. But yeah, that's one of the many changes bound to happen, along with a few others I can't say right now...or maybe I can.

OK, so this entire "start a band for shows" thing didn't work. At all. I'm very frustrated at it.

So I need a solution. Either this goes all-supergroup and becomes low commitment with a finite number of shows planned for 2014 with the band (hint: count on one hand) or we keep on grinding trying to find a solution, or just say screw this and go back to the PA and myself bullcrap everyone else does.

Sorry, I'm trying to craft my own lane here. Don't mind me...

Ahem. More negative postings.

What I really meant to say was that if it happens, odds are it won't be all that often.

OK, that's all I have for now. Happy New Year, we out.

Larnel Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07278590959877513180noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6533726793102771910.post-14709770435519307862013-12-10T17:07:00.001-08:002013-12-10T17:07:10.493-08:00Blog Report: "Just Like the Diamond Cutter, You Never Saw It Coming!"Howdy everyone,

So this will be a nice long and elaborate blog post. Grab a chair and sit down.

First off, there's been another delay for N0_HER0ES that has changed what was supposed to be an early 2014 release into something that may take a month or more to come out. This one is no small delay, rather it's huge and could take awhile to get past.

One of the songs set for the mixtape, may have to be rewritten or replaced entirely, due to the unexpected and unforeseen news that the guest for that song dropped out of the project. As such, I won't go into details, because I still respect the art of privacy (it's not something bad, rather it was a personal decision) and thus, it's a bitter pill to swallow, mainly due to the importance of how the song would affect the mixtape and the narrative planned for the middle chapters, and also puts a yoke around my neck for getting this project done timely.

Also, attempts to start a band have failed spectacularly. Either the people I want to work with are on the other end of MA, work 2 jobs and have no time, are perpetually unavailable, or some other reason I can't think of at the moment.

So the options left now are to keep on trying (the obvious one), or talk to another band and ask if they would consider playing the role of backing band for one night (i.e. The Roots), or swallow my pride, and stick to PA beats (the nuclear option). I'm not looking to compromise my intentions, my goals, just for a quick minute, rather, I'm trying to get the right setting to let these songs shine like they should.

In regards to the collaboration, well, I have a plethora of options, one of them is rewriting the song's 3rd verse, another is recruiting someone else to do the part, and either releasing it on the mixtape or as a remix later down the line. Scrapping it is not an option. Like I said before, no compromising.

This is a tough one. If nothing works, who knows, open it up to the public and find someone that way, I dunno. Like I've believed all my life...it's always the stuff you don't see coming that hurts the most. Sigh.

In other news, next week, we launch "Please Hold: 2014 Sampler" on bandcamp and noisetrade. Be on the lookout.

PN Evolution - coming 1.1.14

See you all later.

Two-for-one this week.

So with N0_HER0ES now having a tracklist and a more solid outlook going forward, time to look back at how exactly this project came to be.

A TIMELINE: N0_HER0ES

August 2012: N0_HER0ES begins it's life as Summer of Fate 2: the bad kids, an idea to merge Project Nightmare and the hip-hop songs into one package, hopefully to combine the two and end any confusion about what they were going forward. Roughly 15 songs were slated for it.

December 2012: Summer of Fate 2 became N0_HER0ES. Quietly announced on Facebook, putting the developed ideas for SOF 2 in limbo.

January 2013: Ideas begin to buzz. One of the ideas was to make it a standard mixtape. Eventually rejected in exchange for a mixtape that was a complete deviation from prior works. The sticking point was synthizers. First version of the tracklist leaked.

March 2013: Demos for more of the songs begin, rejects and abandoned ideas pile up, leaving a core concept, that being "society has no heroes they can trust" and building off a personal opinion - Everyone we praise as a hero, an idol, is exposed in due time and we can't bother to see them the same way.

May 2013: More demos. Delayed the mixtape to TBA 2013, didn't finish the main pieces in time to live up to a tentative summer 2013 release window.

June 2013: 60% of the beats and ideas completed. Lyrics are being written on a slow but steady basis. More ideas, plans to add guests to this project begin in earnest.

July - August 2013: recording begins. collaborators are contacted. The Elusive recorded. Second tracklist internally confirmed.

September 2013: Sick of Running recorded.

October 2013: Final tracklist complete. One track omitted, another added. Final instrumentals finished.

That's the history of N0_HER0ES so far.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And now on to some other stuff.

I've been quiet about getting a band or a backing unit together for N0_HER0ES, mainly due to a bunch of stumbling blocks. Some of them obvious, some of them not so much. Specifically, trying to get a band together at the age of 25 and out of college...is nearly impossible. Especially where I live.

There have been a few close calls, even so far that the demos were being pieced together. But there was always something, from communication issues, to not being able to find a singer and having to start over again, to scheduling issues closing off prospects till the end of 2013. You name it it's happened. And yet it's still going to happen.

I've settled for this being a strung-out process, one that will possibly have immense turnover along the way. And of course, this all being stuck in development for eternity, but who cares right? The goal is in view.

I'm doing my part in this too. Reworking a ton of songs from the mixtape and other projects to create the best possible show I can think of. Preperation and intense pre-production helps along the way so I'm working on all these demos in the interim for my own benefit.

This raises the question I've answered a million times before: Why not just do it alone?

Uhh...I did that. 5-6 times. The last time was defeat in victory, in that the show was the best one I could put on but I was out of place with everyone else playing instruments. So I'm actively trying to avoid that.

And now that live issues have been discussed...time to be frank about what the future possibly holds.

2014 is going to be focused on 3 projects. The 4th album, Good Coffee Inc, and whatever happens if Aces Down 2.0 comes to life. I'm more that ready for this. But it's going to be a lot of work. And a lot of fun.

Hopefully this all works and the proposed documentary I've pitched (!) goes into production....WHOOPS SPILLED THE BEANS!

-MC Larny

I am MC Larny, and this is the Blog Report. Normally this is posted at the start of the week, but not this time.

For all intents and purposes, this is a special edition, so read up and grab a chair.

N0_HER0ES: Well, I've been telling myself I'm going to record this week, and the next, and the next. But I haven't, which is weird, because this has been the only thing going on in my mind and yet, something always pops up.

I want to get this done, and move on to the EP (which will have some sort of preview Nov. 1st) and then onto album #4.

It's never easy, somedays it's just a wake up and a "do it now" mindstate. But that's why they play the game or something like that.

I'm looking at a few options here and there in terms of distribution. Either throwing it onto the compost heap of mixtapes and hoping to get noticed, or staying with my guns and putting it on Bandcamp (like I usually do)...and of course, the possible CD release too.

And at this point I would like to unveil the tracklisting for N0_HER0ES.

And now on to some other things:

OCTOBER SURPRISE: Halloween. Be ready.

EP #2: It's ready to go. Recording alongside the mixtape.

So the story behind it is this. It's a continuation of Confessions After Dark, and it's examining the dreams of someone after they experience a breakup, and how somewhere, deep in their memories, the person they love is still there, and this is the last shot to find them.

Again, the first leak will be on 11/1 via First of the Month. So do stay tuned.

PROJECT NIGHTMARE 6: MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT COMING IN NOVEMBER.

Other projects: Stay tuned (as always)

-MC LarnyLarnel Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07278590959877513180noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6533726793102771910.post-17609768246185948152013-10-07T08:17:00.003-07:002013-10-07T08:17:59.232-07:00Blog Report: All A Matter of Time...And SpaceHello true believers,

So there are a few updates on a couple projects coming up.

N0_HER0ES: Heading back into the lab to record a big chunk of the mixtape. Still need to get collabs done between a few other people, and there's also the matter of getting a live band together (or a reduced lineup) for shows upcoming. Release date timeframe: Could be early 2014, late 2013.

Good Coffee Inc. : on the backburner for a few months. Once N0_HER0ES and EP #2 get out of the way, I plan to get really heavy into this project.

EP #2: First single coming next month. Release date timeframe: End of the year.

Project Nightmare 6 (tentative title) : still on track for winter 2014.

LP # 4: There's been a lot of songs and ideas thrown around for it. It started out as the Insomniac's Dialog (I still have the bootleg photo of the album art and most of the demos), and then became Backwards/Forwards, and now it has no title. I think the final product will be a marriage of all those concepts. Who knows, if there are a few shows I may play some of these unfinished songs live.

I know that I want to at least get the main production underway around the same time I try and piece together EP #3.

Project Nightmare: Days of Future Links - Entering production in 2014.

Live shows are coming. Hold tight!

Those 4 tweets were from what I like to call a harrowing experience. Near-death while driving. Something that to this day has faded into the mix I like to call my life, but every now and then, the engineer raises the level and brings it up to an audible level.

When I originally delayed #N0_HER0ES last spring, I didn't expect to add this experience into the mix, but I wound up writing lyrics about it and then weaving a connective thread that took those events, the moments leading up to them and the moments after, and crafted a 4 song sequence around it.

I have a preview of the interlude that will lead you into it. Enjoy.
It's been a few so I'll give you the details on the next collab for the project.

This starts way back in 2002. Different times, different lives, different paths. So as everyone moves on and grows up and interests change, years later, paths coincide.

Introducing, SamIAM!

So here's the story: Sam and I went to middle school together, and I was at the time slowly getting into rapping, going full blown with the advent of high school. Sam goes to another high school and we barely see each other, probably at least once between then and now.

Flash forward to 2011. Sam's back, with a new rap name and style. I'm pleasantly surprised, because finally my home town has someone who's legit about this rap stuff and not because of Eminem and 8 Mile but because they love it. We re-connect via Facebook and we stay in touch every so often.

During the construction of the mixtape, I came up with the idea of opening this thing up to other people, guests if you will. Sam was on the top of the list of people to ask. He's going to be doing his thing on a track called "Chatterboxes on Mute" which I'm really excited for.

It's funny, you see people from years ago come back into the picture and next thing you know, you connect on the basis of one goal, one passion. I love moments like that.

The mixtape is shaping up to be something special, and I can't wait to share it...but at the same time I can wait because I'm going to make sure this mixtape is launched right. It's my baby and I'm not showing it off until I know it reaches my insane level of quality. So expect it...when it's done (which will be this fall)

It was anything but a good year for me, in terms of life and activities. I started the year by saying goodbye to a bandmate heading to Italy for the semester. Granted we all knew she was leaving, but it didn't make it easier to take. Eventually, the band I was in fell into chaos and disorder, and within a month, I was cast out of my own band.

Slowly, the bricks were being laid down for something. But I didn't know what.

Misfortune would rear it's ugly head again, this time with my computer. A hard drive issue led to me losing all my project files for a set of 2 EPs, which after all that I went through, I was crushed.

And that led to a preemtive call for a hiatus, that was intended to be a career curtain call.

I stepped away, leaving behind a collection of unfinished beats making up the EPs and showing what could have been.

Last Words Left Unsaid by MC Larny

And for 2-3 months, I was living a life without music, without the thing I loved the most. Too heart-broken to do it, I was living life in college, lonely and slowly spiraling downward. And in love, all at the same time.

So in November, I made my mind up to go back, strictly on an instrumental basis for the time being. And with good reason, personal turmoil had made writing impossible because I couldn't think for jack then. I was in love, I was failing out of college, I was depressed, and broke, and had just returned to the artform that in a way, started off my downward spiral of a year.

And yet, something happened. In the final days and hours of 2009, I went into recluse mode. No outside activity, nothing. Just stay in my room with my laptop and work on songs, day in and day out. Get them to a point, save, move on, sleep, do it again.

And then it was time to unveil it.

Project Nightmare: Shut Up Make Music by MC Larny

New Year's Day, right when midnight struck, this went live. I barely remember the day, because I was passing out from exhaustion after the last track and PDF uploaded to Bandcamp. And for a bit, it got some traction.

But for the most part, I was still living with demons. Not the drug/drinking part, the mindstate ones. It was getting worse. And I was unhappy. Still making music, but just unhappy with life. Broke, no job, pressure to go back to college, and a relationship that all but faded out, it was a combination that makes most men sick.

I was convinced Project Nightmare was the one and done creative mulligan I could have. Eventually another full length record would emerge, but alas, that was not happening. Sure, I did write one, and it was really close to happening, but it was way too emotional and too epic for my tastes.

I asked myself "OK, so what can you do to make it different, what could a sequel feel like?"

The answer came from a childhood past time that stayed with me all the way through adolescence.

And that alone would do more for me than I could ever imagine.

Project Nightmare 2.0 by MC Larny

Within 2 months, I had it done. 17 revisions for Project Nightmare 2.0, a video-game related spinoff centered around songs that weren't so obvious to video game fans.

It was at this point in time I started to slowly accept a universal truth: it's so much easier to be yourself.

And then, the real changes began. I got kicked to the curb about 2 weeks after Nightmare 2.0 dropped so my life became a Nightmare....in real life.

The final knockdown after being screwed over so many times. At that point, the fight to get back up and win again begun.

I restarted my life and after a string of "get-it-together" nights out in Boston, I met my close friend, Danny Horgan, at a Public Enemy show.

We connected and we were hanging out frequently. And from this, the sessions for Project Nightmare 3 and Project Nightmare 2.5 were underway.

Nightmare 3 was as much as a victory for me as you could hope for. The guy who recovered from what many would call a set of circumstances that would sink someone else, returns to the scene of the crime 1 year later and does something definitive.

Project Nightmare 3 by MC Larny

I would have to say Nightmare 3 was the one project that probably won't happen again, in terms of experimental ambitions and just overall drive. But man, was it fun.

Divided into 3 acts, each one bleeding into each other with elements from the prior act, it was ambitious. Maybe too much ambition. But I find it just quite the showcase of how I was trying to redefine the constraints of Project Nightmare.

And there was the NYE basement show somewhere in the city of Boston the night before launch. That was a moment....for the first time I had to remake Project Nightmare tracks live using my computer. I admit, first 20 minutes were a tough experience, how do you practice for a DJ gig?

But then, a magical moment happened. I pulled up MIDI from the Metroid games and busted out an entirely improvised jazz remake of various Metroid themes. I called it Jazztroid. People called it amazing.

The ride home on the train, just as 2011 begun was all the needed motivation to realize "You're going places. Stay with it!"

So as 2011 comes in, Project Nightmare X became a reality, thanks to a jazzy remix of a BGM from Mega Man X and added inspiration from friends to make it happen.

After a few delays, Nightmare X comes out, and that's when I started noticing the attention. People were taking note. And then it got even more real.

Project Nightmare IV: The New Normal by MC Larny

I wrote Project Nightmare IV in what was a turbulent time. Friends were changing area codes, I was coming off a frustrating summer of no jobs and a recently nuked computer, and I was still reeling from being kicked to the curb.

But I got over it for the time being. And the end result was a haymaker of a collection. The epic scope of the final 3-4 songs of Nightmare 3 had become the measuring stick for Nightmare IV and what happened was just this brooding, dark, apocalyptic and downright evil collection of beats that were a glimpse into the end of the world as we knew it. There was even more ambition, my beat-making had become almost manic and uncompromising.

It was my creativity finally building. Finally climaxing.

Of course, 2011 also had another major release that year, the track "Fatal Error" which for me, was when Project Nightmare clicked for me and it all came together. This wasn't a one-off thing, nope. It was the big thing in my creative process and it was the best thing to happen to my career, because it gave me a platform to expand my influences on, to see more to music than 16 bars, a hook, and a beat. Stories can be told without words.

Project Nightmare: Summer of Fate Mixtape by MC Larny
And with Project Nightmare 36(5), there was one more facet to it. Evolution over time...what if 1 year was enough time for beats to gestate and become fully featured? What if a compilation was a diary?

Project Nightmare 36(5) by MC Larny

It warrants the question...after all these releases, the game releases (Nightroid, TURBO Mario Edition, Pink Monday, Nightmare X and the upcoming Nightmare X2)...why do you keep doing it?

Simple: I love it. It gets me to a point where I can explore my past, and better understand all the factors that make me who I am. And it gives me a lot more material to enjoy playing with on stage.

Project Nightmare did a lot for me, and it can still do more. It's the gift that kept on giving.
The mixtape has started recording (finally) and we got some friends coming along for the ride. Yes, the guy who famously was "anti-collab" has had a change of heart. Blame being in bands and side-projects and seeing how much different and better stuff sounds with others involved, but this mixtape will have a selection of collaborators join in on the synth-heavy activities.

So without further ado, here's a special look at one of the guests on #N0_HER0ES (coming this fall)!

Meghan from Remember the Grass People (photo credit: Jones Rocktography)

One of the collaborators I've worked with off and on for the past year, Meghan's incredibly talented at what she does, singing and playing guitar in her band Remember The Grass People. I've been fortunate enough to work with her on a few songs, do a few shows with her, and such. So when it came time to put a spin on a classic song from a mutual favorite band, NIN, it was obvious that she was the perfect fit for it.

The song is an interesting one, mainly because it's so different from what I've done. It's minimalist, and just has no more than 3 instruments playing. And it was a hard track to lace lyrical stylings on. I had to break a lot of lyrical conventions that I had about myself and my voice to make it work and the sheer amount of takes it took to get it all in (just for verse 1 alone) was exhausting.

But so far, it's coming out very good. Very good. I'm excited to eventually show it off (but not now, still have to tweak it a little bit), and it's interesting, I'm re-imagining a song that was a crucial part of synth-pop and for a mixtape that bases itself around the instrument, it seemed fitting.

So you know one of the guests. Stay tuned, obviously. Because there's more to come.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In other news, on Soundcloud, 3 new tracks emerged recently.

Peep this.

Also, Project Nightmare 6 (tentative title) has officially entered production. I have some ideas for it, different ideas. But get ready for a change. Things will be different.

Oh yeah, almost forgot. Still getting the band together, planning to get out and do it live before October chimes in. We'll see.
I got one more all-nighter session and the fact I may have some quiet time makes recording more attractive.

and then there's a few other things here and there that I'm working on as well.

the second EP will be done probably in the same sessions of no heroes. sounds crazy. but I know crazy.

aces down 2.0 is stalled. but I'm working on it. no singer yet, but odds are I'm probably going to be holding the bag this time. I even gave some thought to bringing back an old friend to do it but...well, I'd rather not get into it.

project nightmare x2 is up next after the recording is done.

the third EP will probably be happening in the end of the year. going to bring in some friends and guests to flesh out the all unplugged songs. yes, all unplugged. but the challenge will be keeping hip-hop traits in a live music situation.

the next full-length will probably start in 2014. and it will probably be a mix of the EPs, the mixtapes, the bands i've been in and project nightmare.

and there's movement on the trip-hop project too. could be a bigger part of Retroflux. will update on the story as time goes on.

now on the live performance front:

reworking the show to work around the no heroes material. so this means, synths everywhere. glitch everywhere. dubstep nowhere to be found (GTFO)

there may be a minimal band lineup. 50% pre-rendered, 50% live. yeah like I'm going to run 10 different synths live. you nuts.

Fall 2013 sound good? OK, how about next month?

So stay tuned. Collabs will be revealed soon. Get ready.

-mc larny

Only thing about it was, it was different. The songs took on a nature of their own. The nature was that, the songs couldn't be done using pre-programmed beats...they had to be made live, with real people, real instruments.

In that breath, the decision was made to reform/restart Aces Down, or at least try to.

I've been working with Andrew Warnock (ex-Mojo Kick) for the past couple of months to reconfigure the sound. It's been a creative crash-course in what does and does not work. And now the rest of the pieces of this project are filling out, gradually. Still a lot of work to be done. Specifically the search for a lead singer (I'm not doing that..can't sing and unless we want to play hardcore punk, I'm really limited) and probably a bassist.

But I'm excited for it, because I've wanted to do it for years now. It's going to happen. The rest of the pieces will be unveiled soon enough. Really really soon...we're trying to get everyone in the same room to jam....

Not easy. But it never was....

Larnel Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07278590959877513180noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6533726793102771910.post-50906918108400420112013-06-25T09:57:00.000-07:002013-06-25T09:57:00.448-07:00EXPOSE DAY 2: There Are No HeroesSynthesizers are underrated. Often viewed in hip-hop as the instrument used by everyone to replace the sounds they wish they had, it's time to do something a little more...out there with it. An orchestra of synths? Sure, why not.

No Heroes was built on two foundations. The disgust with popular people and the fancy fashion of them being exposed for who they really are was the first foundation. The second was the sound, the idea behind it. It's a good enough idea for a mixtape. And it will be some of the most on-point material I pen in...forever.

It's not going to sound like NIN in hip-hop form, it's going to sound like a new idea. Listen for yourself.

I would never imagine that it would be such an edge-pusher. And somehow it still is, in light of Mr. West's new release. I'm hoping to finish the production by the end of the month and record in July...for a guy who never does mixtapes, this is taking so long.

I originally intended to go solo entirely with this one...but as of now, the goal is to get at LEAST 2 cameos on there. Could happen, could not, we'll see. It may have crossed into "free album" territory with all the work being done for it.

Enjoy a sample. COMING THIS AUGUST.

OK, so the radio silence has been for a good reason. The building of Retroflux for one, the work on N0_HER0ES and the planning for a couple of side-projects have made this blog a silent place.

But that's over. Here's a little story about a project on my docket since 2010.

Ever since I planned this EP series out, I always intended for the last EP to be a stripped down, unplugged effort, taking me into really unfamiliar territory that I have merely hinted at previously.

So with that said, this idea has been off and on, mostly because a). Writing a conceptual trilogy is tough, b). This needs real instruments and people, and c). Bad luck.

The furthest I got on this was back in 2010, when I ran through about 5 rough songs with a friend, planning it all out (at the time, I had no confidence with actually directing a song's creation) and with a different idea of who would be a part of it.

3 years later, and the project still lives but the cast has changed. People have moved, or fallen out with me, or whathaveyou.... I did come up with 4 good ideas for songs recently. One of them has the working title "Winter" and if I can get it to be 6 minutes, or close, then it works.

The challenge is to capture emotions after the story arcs towards the ending. And also to not sound whiny. In a way, it's creating a <strike>rap</strike> hip-hop album, with the limitations of nothing plugged in, no computers, turntables, sampling, etc. Somehow there's a way to retain the DNA of hip-hop production (patterns, 4/4 drumming, chopped up keys, etc) and bring it over to the MTV Unplugged world.

Once the mixtape is out, the real fun begins. Hoping to get it out in the winter months...writing as many sequences for a full story as possible to hopefully start playing around with later on.

We'll see what happens, but it WILL happen.

-mc larnyLarnel Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07278590959877513180noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6533726793102771910.post-74624358823392842362013-04-17T21:30:00.000-07:002013-05-06T18:11:20.172-07:00The Collective Lives: Enter RETROFLUXA while ago, I pondered this idea of a collective, back in the summer. After being involved in a flurry of projects in that year (4 different ones) and making a fair amount of connections, something clicked in my head.

What if you started a collective?

I rebuffed that initially, thinking "who would want to join up for something like this?" Then I thought it over, looked at other collectives and saw serious potential among the friends and experiences I had in the past year.

Also, I felt that it would be nice to have a creative umbrella for all the upcoming projects I have, and a way to keep an association to those I want to work with/those who want to work with me. It didn't make sense to have 5 different projects or more going without some unifying method, something that could house the different ideas and projects. Sort of like a museum, it has different artists, but all under one place. Sure, they reside in different halls, different wings, but it's all in one place.

So after debating it, I discussed with friends about the idea, and it took me awhile to nail down some details, no thanks to a severe set of distractions early in the year 2013.

But with my mind clear, and my vision clear, now is the time. I'm proud to announce the formation of...

Here's a little explaination. No Heroes is an idea I came up with last December.

At the time, there were a few things in my life that I was certain were going to happen. Those things didn't happen. Plans changed.

So here we are right now. No Heroes puts me in a new role, the role of musician experimenting with technology. I'll make no bones about it, in 2008, when I resumed making beats, I was pushing to make things more "real", avoiding software instruments that sounded too fake. Mostly because of Soulja Boy blowing up, and because everyone else with FL Studio was doing it too.

As my music has evolved, I've found synths to be interesting, a reminder of an era long gone. And a chance to craft a soundscape without a full ensemble of instruments. So with that noted, I took an idea...what if you had 4-5 synthesizers playing like an orchestra? A digital orchestration of synths making distorted noise.

This is a rough example of what No Heroes will sound like. Come back for more.

And I think now is the right time to say it.

I know full well that it's prime time to start a collective. But more specifically, I want to get a live backing band going. I've got my reasons for it too:

Almost every show has been with live instruments so far

I enjoy working with people in music

Just rapping over a beat is a cop-out

A live band gives more flexibility to arrangements. Songs can be expanded, truncated, re-imagined, etc.

The last show was a big reason to get the ball rolling. I was the only guy without an instrument. It was awkward. Good show, but it was off-setting.

However, reality is a bit of a downer in this situation. The problem is that right now, many of the people I want to play with are in a stage where no one's in a centralized location, making coordination of practice and other things, hard, if not impossible.

So in a simple way of saying it, the next generation of the live band (working title is Aces Down 2.0) will not have a static lineup, rather, it will be dynamic and changing. Instead of going through the process of losing someone then blowing it up, it will hopefully work in the fact that people come and go, and pieces will be added and subtracted as the moment calls for it. And before anyone asks, this is a bit different from the untitled project I was working on last year. Not the exact same, but unique enough to avoid confusion.

Another reason why I want to work with a band is because I have a plethora of songs written that quite frankly, would be wasted on the computerized beats method. Not saying beats are bad, but in these cases, live instrumentation gives better energy to the music that's trying to be made. There's a certain anger, a darkness to these songs that I don't think MIDI programming could totally make sense of.

Here's what I'm looking for:

Guitar: Lead and Bass.

Vocalist: Hooks/Choruses and Harmonic Verses.

Drummer: Able to play mid-tempo jams, can keep a steady beat

So yes, the next wave is going to happen. Hoping this summer or late spring but I have my doubts. Mum's the word.

I guess it was an experiment, if I could actually create a show that was reliant on one person, rather than a group of people, and do it over and over again. A sampler of a future life, I guess.

Show #1 at Patrick's in Malden was a warm up, a chance to tweak some things, soundwise and manipulation wise as well. Also, working on stage presence and just focus trying to incorporate the elements of my skill set was a focus. I would say the appreciation I received was great and encouraging. Mainly because I changed my approach.

I stopped trying to be the perfect guy, and instead just went out and existed.

Show #2 at the All Asia was rough to start with. Hoping that a chunk of my friends would be there as moral support kinda didn't happen...so I took the stage, a little nervous, a little afraid.

And what happened was magical. Just entering a zone that for so many nights, I had dreamed about, planned out and mentally prepared myself to step into.

I went for nearly 30 minutes, all rapping. Which scares me, because I think my max was probably 20 minutes, but 30, without a drink next to me, was wild.

Getting props from the bartender was a huge boost in my confidence as well.

This was fun, very much so. Thanks to everyone who came out to see me, it was great.

Now with that out of the way, it's time to talk about some other business.

TRACK 1: For those who were not in the know, last Friday, I posted a mystery remix on Soundcloud.

It was a preview, and now that it's over, time to officially announce Project Nightmare: Pink Monday. Coming....NEXT MONDAY. Uh-huh.

ACES DOWN 2.0: Under construction. Still setting a number of objectives and targets to keep this project more focused and make it easier to explain.

Project Nightmare 36(5): It's out. It's done. I think that was the one time I really set my mind to something and achieved it. Long-term build for a long-term payoff. Good times.

Expect more postings in the next few days. Peace.
